Call for Papers
The Eastern Dimension: Major Intelligence Issues in Central and Southeastern
Europe since 1900
The International Intelligence History Association will hold its 10th Annual
Conference in cooperation with the "Austrian Center for Intelligence, Propaganda
and Security Studies"of the Department of History, Karl-Franzens-Universität
Graz, from June 4 to 6, 2004 at the "Bildungshaus Mariatrost" on the outskirts
of the Styrian capital.
Graz, the sole "European Cultural Capital" in 2003, is Austria's second largest
city and home of Austria's second oldest university, traditionally an academic
center geared to Southeastern Europe.
The conference will be held within weeks of an historic event which will
markedly expand European horizons eastwards, as ten countries, most of them new
democracies, will join the hitherto largely west-, south-and north-dominated
European Union. Our anniversary conference, the first held outside of Germany,
will accordingly deal with "The Eastern Dimension. Major Intelligence Issues in
Central and Southeastern Europe since 1900". It will provide the opportunity for
panels and papers to focus on relevant developments in territories eastwards of
Berlin, Frankfurt/M., Vienna and Trieste in regard to both national and
international intelligence activities in the course of the 20th century. These
should preferably pertain to the following countries: Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria as well as to
the historical Yugoslavia (1918-1991) as a whole. A special panel on the
significance of the expansion of the EU from 15 to 25 member-states in reference
to projected new needs for intelligence coordination and cooperation in the
future is also planned.
The conference languages will be English (preferred) and German. The conference
will be open to the general public. It will be organized by

Please send your proposals for panels and papers, including a one page abstract,
a short CV and a selected list of your major intelligence-related publications
to Prof. Beer as soon as possible, but no later than February 1, 2004. The
conference chair and the association especially encourage submissions from
younger researchers and advanced postgraduate students. General inquiries should
