Increasing security levels for smartcards
Wanting to achieve greater security for smartcards chips, a Cambridge University research group, reconsidered the whole chip development process and established new design criteria that are providing security against quite a number of new attack techniques.


Chaos: the Key to Security?
Czech researchers have successfully applied complex chaos theory to advance the state-of-the-art in encryption. The results can help promote higher levels of security, for example for online credit card transactions.


Asynchronous design for increased electronic security
Smart cards are widely used, however, they are subject to various types of attack and this imposes new demands on assessing their security, particularly for financial transactions. A newly developed asynchronous circuit technique, namely the dual-rail logic, is expected to provide increased protection of smart cards against attacks.


Network and Information Security: Better standards to improve security

A set of recommendations on network and information security standards will be debated at an open meeting to be held on 13 June in Brussels. The recommendations have been produced by the Network and Information Security (NIS) Focus Group, a group of technical experts set up by the two European standards organisations CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) further to the request of the Commission's services, in response to the Commission's Communication on Network and Information.

US - MAN SENTENCED FOR INVOLVEMENT IN INTERNET AUCTION FRAUD
Jay Nelson, 35, was sentenced to 6 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one of the largest internet auction fraud investigations, involving more than 1,700 victims. Nelson conducted online auctions on eBay and Yahoo!, then failed to deliver the merchandise.
